House of Genius Project

The House of Genius Project is part of a group digital project on Washington Square and Greenwich Village conducted by librarians in the Humanities and Social Sciences department of NYU’s Bobst Library. Amanda Watson, Arthur Tannenbaum, and Andrew H. Lee are exploring the history of the building known as the House of Genius that used to stand at 61 Washington Square South. They are also investigating the broader question of NYU’s relationship with Washington Square. Amanda Watson is tracking the area’s persistent association with literature. Andrew H. Lee is looking at the intricate history popularly referred to as “town and gown.” Arthur Tannenbaum is providing a long and personal view of over more than fifty years of changes in the area via an oral history.
